Mama-Rawma’s Holiday Magic Squares




For the holidays each year, my mom makes these delicious little confections she calls “Magic Squares”. For many, many years, Magic Squares were my favourite holiday treat but sadly, I can no longer enjoy their devilish goodness… They are piled high with walnuts, chocolate chips and coconut coated in condensed milk on top of a graham cracker and butter crust – gluten and dairy galore! After all these years, I couldn’t take it anymore and I finally took matters into my own hands! I created these decadent little squares of raw vegan delight. My sister, also once a fan of the Magic Squares, was over at my house during their test run and got a sneak peak at how delicious the raw version is. Now I have perfected the recipe and she is anxiously waiting for me to give up the secret, so here it is…. and I dedicate this recipe to her.

Nutty Layer

1/2 cup walnuts
1 cup almonds
1 cup shredded coconut
2 tbsp coconut oil
2 tbsp coconut sugar
1 tsp vanilla extract

  • Throw all ingredients (except the coconut oil) in the food processor and pulverize them until they make up a not too coarse, not too fine crumbly texture.
  • Melt the coconut oil and pour it into the nuts. Mix until it is all well incorporated.
  • Press the crust into an 8″ brownie pan and put into the freezer to set.

Fudge Layer

1 cup dates, soaked for 1 hour
1/4 cup almond milk (or any non-dairy milk)
1/2 cup walnuts
2 tbsp macadamia nut butter (or any raw nut butter, really)
1/4 cup hazelnuts
1 tsp vanilla extract
4 tbsp raw cacao

  • Throw all these ingredients in the food processor and blend until the mixture is smooth and creamy. You will definitely need to stop and scrape the sides down a few times just to make sure it is all incorporated.
  • Evenly spread the chocolate layer on top of the crust. Sprinkle shredded coconut on top.
  • Put it back in the freezer to set. Keep frozen; Remove it 25-30 minutes before serving.
  • Eat one with a nice cold glass of almond milk. Happiness to all.

  1. Wow, this recipe really sounds like it would certainly more than satisfy my sweet tooth in a raw vegan kind of way! I can’t wait to try it! The best part is that all of the ingredients are easy to find and most people would already have most of the ingredients in their fridge and pantry.
